Title: It's Me, Hi - I'm the Problem It's Me: The Over-Involved & Burnt Out Advisor
Lead Presenter: Olivia Miller
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: As academic advisors, helping and caring come naturally - we help our students, our units, our institution and our professional field. This can be seen in typical job descriptions - advising, professional development and/or service and everyone's favorite, other duties as assigned. Yet what happens when a helper is trying to help too many people in too many ways? What happens when the helpers are caring (a NACADA core value) for too many people in too many ways?

With the help of Taylor Swift, this presentation will discuss the consequences of overcommitting in one's role and how this leads to burnout, introduce socialization theory and reflect on individual experiences of over involvement from undergraduate and (perhaps) graduate school, discuss how burnout can affect our students and offer solutions with implementing boundaries. All are welcome, not just Swifties!
