Abstract: Advancing Gender Disparity in Technology

Women's presence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) academic majors and professions remains disproportionately low. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects significant growth in computer-related jobs, with an estimated 300,000 new positions by 2031. Despite this demand, women remain underrepresented in STEM degrees and careers. This presentation explores the root causes of gender disparity in tech, the importance of diversity in driving corporate success, and the role of educational institutions in promoting inclusivity. We highlight the Break Through Tech (BTT) initiative, focusing on its expansion to Chicago and its impact on increasing gender diversity in technology fields, particularly among underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. We also discussed strategies for fostering a more inclusive tech ecosystem through curriculum innovation, mentorship programs, and diverse leadership.
