Abstract:
|
Building a Socially Just Profession Through Unstructured Conversations
The ability to enact social justice within the advising profession is often hampered by a lack of time, limited training, unfair distribution of labor, and uneven distribution of resources. Fostering conversations that prioritize social justice can work towards mitigating structural issues that interfere with collaborative ideas, equitable practice, networked resilience, and sustained empowerment. This session will explore how unstructured conversations foster social justice in the advising profession. The skills and awareness necessary for unstructured conversation can help advisors understand and support diversity, equity, and inclusion. The session will cover disrupting power dynamics, building trust, taking reflective actions, and cultivating openness and curiosity. Examples will form the basis for inviting participants to practice unstructured conversation and identify ways such conversations can benefit social justice efforts on their campuses. |
