Title: Mission Impossible: Using Validation to Help Students Overcome Barriers to Change.
As professionals within the advising community, we often work with students who struggle academically and need support for future growth. However, advisors will often come across students who are having difficulty accepting their academic standing, leading to anxiety, anger, or disengagement that prohibits change. In this session, participants will learn the six levels of validation from Marsha Linehan, and how they can be transformed from a therapeutic to an advising tool that expands the disarming phase of Appreciative Advising. After reviewing the phases of appreciative advising and learning the levels of validation with examples for academic advising integration, participants will discuss how this new toolkit can benefit their current advising practice. |
