Title:
Enhancing STEM Success through Student Engagement and Effective Performance Improvement Plans
Abstract:
This session addresses the critical role of student engagement in academic success, particularly for STEM students facing challenges in their academic progression, including those on academic probation and/or not meeting Progress Toward Degree requirements. By presenting data on these students and introducing research-based advising strategies, we aim to provide academic advisors with the tools needed for creating impactful Performance Improvement Plans (PIP). These plans, featuring SMART objectives, measurable outcomes, and relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), are designed to enhance student engagement, foster a sense of belonging, and empower students towards academic success. The presentation will offer practical, interactive activities for advisors to learn inclusive engagement strategies and strength-based advising approaches, thereby improving student performance and retention at the departmental and university levels. |
