Abstract:

Advising TKO: Leverage Timing, Knowledge, and Opportunity to Advocate for Self as You Do for Students
An advocacy orientated advisor is a change agent that keeps student rights on the forefront and vocalizes their concerns (Bemak & Chung, 2010) However, many are reluctant to do the same for themselves. This session is designed to help advisors see the value of advocating for themselves like they do for students. Advisors will identify advocacy skills used in the profession for student development and how they can be leveraged to advocate for positive changes in their roles. Participants will share experiences in round table discussions and create a toolbox of ways to address areas of opportunity in their work life demands. Participants will use their toolbox to practice addressing identified issues by working through various scenarios.
