When Everyone In the Burgh Is Not Happy-Advisors, Important Champions for Students with Depression
College students are reporting higher rates of depression and suicidality than in past years. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the 15-24-year-old age groups. Besides the serious nature of mental illnesses, they impact academics in alarming ways Learning, going to class, completion of homework are challenging. Students with depression take more time to complete their degree than students who do not report mental health issues. In this session we will explore how symptoms of depression impact the student, advisement sessions, and performance in the classroom. Ideas will be presented on best practices for advising students with depression and suicidality and how to ask the most difficult of questions. |
