Abstract:
|
Technology as a tool of communication has become universal. Its impact on student experience in the university setting cannot be ignored, particularly as it relates to academic advising and student retention. While retention in higher education is a campus-wide collaborative effort, academic advising has long been identified as a key area of focus. Communication between students and advisors is imperative to effective advising and students' perception of the value and success of the advising function which in turn contributes to their intent to persist. Based on a review of relevant literature and reflections on direct conversations with advisors and administrators in the undergraduate advising field, this proposal provides insights on their experiences with technology-mediated communication, its impact on student-advisor interactions as related to retention, and the challenges in implementing technology-mediated communication in everyday advising practice. |
