Title: Undeclared Students: Identity and Choice of Major
Lead Presenter: Lindsey Hresko
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Is identity a factor when an undeclared student chooses their college major? This presentation examines the relationship between identity and major for students who entered college undeclared and analyzes which identities may predict the choice of major. The presentation will use data from a four-year university to identify trends with major declarations around 1) gender, 2) race, 3) socioeconomic status, and 4) first-generation college student status. Findings from this study lead to broader discussions around academic policies. What type of university policies or cultural norms may be causing academic gatekeeping that prevents marginalized students from entering certain majors? This presentation will address the implications of imbalances within academic programs, and discuss how can advisors better serve undeclared students with respect to their identities and major choices.
