Title: Bridging Generations: Lessons Learned from Serving First-Year Students and Adult Learners
Lead Presenter: Shane Combs
Date: October 27, 2025    Time: 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Room: Verona/Turin/Trevi, Promenade Level
Abstract: In our exploration of academic advising for special populations, we have identified significant commonalities between First-Time-In-College (FTIC) and Adult Learners/Post-Traditional students. Despite their age differences, both groups often struggle with a sense of belonging, imposter syndrome, and persistence due to a lack of holistic advising. Our presentation utilizes mixed methodologies, analyzing survey data from wellness and mentorship events to reveal shared experiences and challenges. We apply identity theories to guide advisors in transitioning personas and present a case study on major reselection, offering a comprehensive framework to enhance advising. By cultivating an inclusive advising environment, we strive to provide other institutions (including community colleges) with strategies and theoretical frameworks designed to dismantle barriers that isolate diverse student populations.
