Title: How to Lose an Advisor in 10 Days: Exploring Challenges & Solutions to Improve Your Advising Career
Lead Presenter: Sam Mosca
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Between large caseloads, lack of skill development, and limited career advancement, keeping advisors is difficult. Training new advisors is costly and time-consuming, with institutions often failing to provide employee support after their initial training - ultimately resulting in high-turnover. This presentation explores why advisors leave their positions and proposes future solutions to improve longevity in the advising role. Solutions are offered at the individual, departmental, and institutional level, including organizational changes, technological advancements, and skill-development opportunities. Ideas and solutions presented are based on a large, public, research university but can be adapted by advisors and administrators from both 2- and 4- year colleges for use at their own institutions.
