Abstract: Increasing Advising Communication Usability through User Experience Design

This presentation demonstrates how advisors can increase the efficacy of student-facing communications using principles from the field of User Experience (UX) Design.

UX professionals use design thinking to deliver usable, equitable, enjoyable, and useful products to consumers. Advisors can apply these principles to ensure that our communications are usable for and by our consumers - students. I'll focus on the empathize and define phases of the design thinking process, including UX tools like empathy maps, user stories, problem statements, and user personas to identify and articulate student needs in order to design communications that meet them. After empathizing and defining what students need from advisor communication, we can apply basic UX design principles to ensure that our communications succeed at delivering information to students in a usable way.
