Abstract:
|
Connecting the dots for First-Year Exploratory Students through Competencies and Engagement
Student engagement is a cornerstone of student success, underutilized by first-year students. Engagement opportunities are rewarding for students socially, academically, and professionally. Many professional organizations provide core competencies to prepare students for their future goals. First year students are unaware of engagement opportunities and how to utilize activities to prepare them for internships, employment and graduate programs. Advisors play a key role in educating students about engagement opportunities that complement their academic/professional goals and prepare them for post-graduation goals. We synthesized a set of competencies and worked towards concrete ways to assist students to achieve the competencies via engagement opportunities. The Core Competencies outline a set of related knowledge and transferrable skills that contribute to an individual's success, at or beyond the university. |
