Abstract:

Validating Experiences: International Students' Reflections of Effective Advising Interactions
Despite the extensive research on international students' educational acculturation and academic adjustment challenges, the role of academic advising in assisting with these challenges has received little attention. This presentation reviews the findings of a recent qualitative research study conducted by the presenter on how international students' communications with their academic advisors influenced their educational adjustment and growth. Critical themes include advisor-advisee interactions, quality of information, and advising limits regarding international student policies. Discussion will challenge the audience to reflect on their communicative approaches when advising their international advisees and the common obstacles they encounter when facilitating their advisee's adjustment and growth. This presentation will conclude with recommendations on communication strategies that study participants have found beneficial and justifications for collaboration between advising units and international student offices. |
