Abstract: Leveraging Black Students' Voices and Experiences to Identify Twelve Pillars of Inclusive Advising

While research has focused on attending to the needs of Students of Color in advising, this presentation specifically centers and leverages the voices, needs, and experiences of Black advisees as the foundation for a three-year campus-wide advising redesign initiative. During this session presenters will share our approach towards identifying, conceptualizing, and refining twelve pillars of inclusive advising at a large, public, predominately White institution in the Midwest. Session attendees will leave with examples of focus groups protocols that can be adapted to their campuses, suggestions for navigating difficult advising conversations centered on race, plus ideas to incorporate and sustain student voices into organizational change initiatives.
