Abstract:
|
As perceptions of the value of higher education have been increasingly shaped by rising student loan debt and graduates' marketability in the workforce, the role of academic advisors has become even more critical in achieving student success goals. Yet precious little is understood in the research and at the administrative level about the connection between effective advising and improved retention and graduation rates. This is why we developed the 5E Framework (i.e., Educate, Empower, Enhance, Elevate, and Evaluate) and the Advising Rubric as a university system - to cultivate shared standards and responsibility across our institutions, to demonstrate the value of effective academic advising on student success outcomes, and to convince administrators to invest the necessary resources to academic advising units. This presentation will explain the development of these advising tools, how we address challenges, and how these tools can serve as a model for other academic advising units. |
