Abstract: Designing With Chaos: A Workshop Series For Exploratory Community College Students

For the one-third of college students who identify as first-generation, the major selection process poses a particular challenge. Many do not have the opportunity to fully explore their educational and career options before selecting a major. This challenge is exacerbated in the community college setting, where the focus on timely degree completion and employment can overshadow opportunities for meaningful exploration.

In this presentation, we offer an exploratory workshop curriculum designed for the community college but applicable to any institution. Drawing upon an eclectic mix of tools from Life Design to Chaos Theory, we present a relational model for helping two-year and first-generation college students embrace the exploration process and align their values and interests with meaningful academic and career plans.
