Abstract: Americans with Disabilities Basics: Effective Strategies for Individuals with Disabilities
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, "in 2019-2020, around 21 percent of undergraduates and 11 percent of postbaccalaureate students reported having disabilities" (NCES). As higher education professionals, we will continue to see an increase in individuals with disabilities on our campuses, and we should have a basic knowledge base on how to engage and communicate and ensure basic accessibility needs are met.

This presentation will cover the basics of the ADA, specifically related to higher education, including Section 504 and Title III. What is the definition of a disability according to the ADA? Learn about a variety of disabilities as well as the possible functional impacts. Finally, we will review effective strategies for accessibility and best practices when advising/interacting with students with known or perceived disabilities.
