Abstract: Championing Student Success and Bridging the Gap with Diverse STEM Populations

Advising STEM students at a large public university presents various challenges and opportunities. Building rapport with students during advising interactions and recognizing their unique characteristics is the initial step towards a successful advising experience.

This presentation will provide a summary with actionable strategies and insights for advisors to enhance their advising style, communication, and engagement to foster student success. With appropriate strategies, an advisor can play a transformative role in a student's educational experience.

Through an interactive format that includes case studies, research findings, and practical tools, we intend to provide advisors with the knowledge and skills necessary to empower this distinct student population. We encourage participants to bridge the gap and actively engage in dialogue by sharing experiences of their own unique Burgh.
