Abstract:

Advising Unhoused and Housing Insecure Students: Helping an Underserved Student Population
Housing insecurity is a great problem among college students. According to a 2020 survey by The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, half of all college students are housing insecure at some point in their academic careers and 14% of students are unhoused. These alarming statistics show that this student population is one that needs to be highlighted more to ensure their success in college. Because of their housing situation, students in this category need special considerations to get them through their college years. I will be presenting techniques for helping this population that caters to these special needs. These techniques include best practices for identifying the population, services needed to support the population, and the best structures for the program in general. |
