Abstract:

We All Need Some Damn Praise - Academic Advising a Dis/Crit Perspective
This workshop focuses on understanding how Dis/Crit can inform college advising. Black students are the most academically marginalized group. This workshop aims to provide historical context for Black students' marginalized status. The workshop also engages attendees in discussing how college academic advisors as institutional agents are instrumental in Black students' success. Advising philosophies and strategies will be introduced, and attendees will be asked to explore their personal advising philosophy. Finally, when the needs of the most marginalized students are met, all students' needs will be met.
This presentation covers the following topics:
Dis/Crit - Anti-Blackness, Critical White Studies (CWS), ableism, critical practices in academic advising, stories from Black students with disabilities, and finally, disability academic counselors' reflections on their work, disabilities, and Blackness. |
