Abstract: More than a GPA: Using Noncognitive Strengths framework in preparing targeted first-year students with their transition into higher education.

GPAs or standardized test scores may not always accurately reflect a student's academic capabilities. A student's learning experiences and/or non-academic related factors can play a role in a student performance and success. The Biddle Institute is an freshman transition program serving targeted first-year students admitted to the university based on noncognitive strengths rather than traditional measures. Noncognitive strengths such as: Resilience or Self-Efficacy are integrated in our programming to present an holistic approach to student success. Drawing work from Dr. William Sedlacek (1993), Biddle Institute employs a comprehensive approach to help students transition into campus life, identify and develop non-cognitive strengths and how they can be applied in and outside of the classroom.
