Abstract: Normalizing Academic Advisor Wellness: Cultivating a Culture of Care for Our Students and Ourselves

The modern college student is changing in many ways: Mental health issues are on the rise; many students are balancing part-time jobs and an increasing number of students prefer online advising appointments. Advisors on the front line are a big part of helping create a culture of care for our students- but are we forgetting to care for ourselves? How do we create a culture of care for ourselves without feeling guilty? How do we avoid advisor burnout? This presentation seeks to find strategies for self-care while addressing a much-needed paradigm shift in normalizing wellness as a whole. One that allows us to continue to cultivate a culture of care for the students we work with-without forgetting to care for ourselves.
