Abstract: This proposal examines the academic and sociocultural challenges that international students face when they transition to a new country/university and the opportunities at their exposure. It shows how leveraging social media to introduce students to the academic and cultural norms and expectations of the higher education system and help them adjust to the new environment. We will share some strategies and best practices for helping these students to have a sense of empowerment in the classroom and beyond. Using the acculturation and adaptation theory we will discuss why advisors and university communities must provide their international students with the best possible experience and ensure that their acculturation motivation is helping them thrive.
