Fostering Bonds: Elevating Advisor Retention with Mentorship Connections
Our advising journeys started with little opportunity to build relationships across campus and develop professionally beyond the nuts and bolts of prescriptive advising. Craving support and guidance to develop more meaningful and impactful relationships with students, we knew that experienced advisors could offer individual support for new advisors to find their own path is not always possible in isolated decentralized advising centers.
Encouraging experienced and overworked advisors to take on a mentee can be tough, but a clearly laid out program with activities and responsibilities outlined expectations and activities makes this less daunting. We will not always have the avenue to increase pay to influence retention, but we can create a positive and collaborative environment among advisors across campus that will positively impact advisor retention. |
