Abstract:

Laying the Foundation for First-Year Success: Enhancing Student Engagement from Day One
Navigating a successful transition to college can be challenging. Research shows that academic achievement at the end of the semester is closely related to what happens at the beginning of the semester (e.g., how to approach learning and study time). Retention and graduation rates depend highly on the first weeks of cognitive and behavioral engagement. Therefore, promoting students' engagement early, before the beginning of the semester and the first weeks, should be prioritized. Academically, emotionally, and socially prepped students are more likely to be retained, graduate, and have positive college experiences. Research on cognitive and behavioral engagement and advising strategies related to first-year students' success will be reviewed. Tools that advisors can utilize with entering students will be demonstrated through interactive participant activities. |
