Abstract:
|
Advising First-year, First-generation Students Who Place into Developmental Courses
This session, based on the presenter's 2023 dissertation, will discuss best practices for advising first-year, first-generation college students (FGCS) who place into developmental courses. The presenter will focus on the unique and compounding barriers that this population of students have and how advisors can use Nancy Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) to consider the four S's--situation, self, support, and strategies--to better understand and proactively advise these students in a way that increases the likelihood of persistence and retention. The presentation will be informed by the findings of the dissertation study, which confirmed the need that at-promise students have for intentional, thoughtful, compassionate interventions that take place in the context of building trusted relationships. |
