Abstract:
If you have worked in higher education for more than 5 minutes, you have likely encountered a student with unreasonably high expectations of you or your institution. They might say things like 'You have to fix this' or 'No one told me...', or even 'I pay your salary; this is your problem.' Maybe they expect inappropriate levels of accommodation, or they are unwilling to accept multiple solutions to a problem. Perhaps they assume the policies of the institution don't really apply to them. In short, they display an entitlement mindset. In this interactive presentation, we will review current research, share our thoughts, and discuss best practices on how to encourage students to regain their agency in decision-making and problem-solving by making the move from entitled to empowered. |
