Presentation Info and Handouts
Conference Year: 2020
Session #: C8.6(LEC)
Title: Active Advising: Incorporating Active Learning Into the Advising Session
Lead Presenter: Sabina Kapoor
Date: October 08, 2020    Time: 1:10 pm - 1:55 pm
Room: Semi-Live
Abstract: Some advisors tend to structure their advising meetings similar to the traditional classroom, where the advisor lectures or verbally presents information to students, while the students passively listens. Though they may say they understand, many do not truly comprehend the information or how it affects them. As a result, students tend to forget, and advisors find themselves repeating the same information in subsequent advising meetings. Active advising is derived from active learning and is the notion that students learn by being an integral part of his/her learning. When active advising is incorporated into the sessions, students apply higher level thinking and better understand the information; thus, they are more likely to later recall. The presenter will incorporate active learning into the session to demonstrate how active advising can be incorporated into student sessions.
