Title: Impacting Student Success Among Academically Underprepared STEM Students in Massachusetts

Abstract: Academic and career advising 'provides mechanisms to encourage STEM students to persist to graduation, connect them with opportunities in their discipline, and help them identify [supports] to enable their success.' (Beery, 2012). Yet many community college students who are referred to general advising and to other campus and community resources do not use them, or they find these resources do not speak directly to their needs as STEM students. Could specialized STEM advising increase persistence in their program? The STEM Starter Academy program at MassBay Community College implemented intrusive STEM advising in the 2019-2020 school year. Preliminary results of program modification to include intrusive advising suggest that increased contact with a professional advisor dedicated to their needs increases student responsiveness to academic and social-emotional guidance.
