Abstract: Teaching the Art of Difficult Conversation in an Advising Context
Academic advisors are well positioned to convey to students that the college classroom is not only a site of knowledge transmission but also a laboratory for civic engagement and growth. In this panel discussion, a team of advisors will discuss different ways we are helping students to become more willing, active, and capable participants in classroom discussions of contested issues and questions. We will detail some approaches to coaching advisees from diverse populations including first-generation, non-traditional, underprivileged and traditional students on how to engage in authentic conversation about difficult subjects and wrestle with views they may find strange, false, or even objectionable. The overall goal of the session is to show how advisors can jump-start students on the path to a more civically formative and intellectually liberating academic experience.
