Room: Semi-Live
Abstract: Campus advisor are frequently the first contact students have at their new institution. Moreover, advisors have the opportunity to influence the student's educational path, social, and mental development (Drake, 2011). Yet, many students, specifically first-generation students of color, drop out or do not graduate from college. These students struggle with barriers preventing them from enrolling in college, remaining in college, and graduating. Motivation defined as a process of initiating a desired goal, and motivation is one of the most critical concepts in education. To motivate students there must be trust established between the student and advisor. Thus, college and universities must continuously evaluate their advising practices. This session will explore current practices in the field of higher education advising, and we will develop and explore ways to empower first-generation students of color.
