Title: I'm Being Positive and I Don't Know It: The Use of Positive Psychology Interventions in Advising
Lead Presenter: Shawn Fields
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Positive psychology is the study of optimal human functioning, and positive psychology interventions (PPIs) are methods used to increase positive affect. Advisors can better fulfill their roles as 'helpers' by increasing student retention and graduation rates through the use of PPIs. This session will explore the results of a questionnaire created to examine the use of PPIs at a single university with a large population of academic advisors. These advisors were asked to share how often they employed techniques from a list of ten in their retention efforts. The techniques were actually a list of PPIs. The advisors were also asked if they were familiar with the terms positive psychology and positive psychology intervention. The presenters will assist attendees in planning to effectively employ PPIs at their own institutions.
