Abstract: We Created an Advising Center... Now What? Managing Advisor Workload After Implementing a Professional Advising Model

In recent years, emphasis has been placed on establishing the value of professional advisors and implementing models that utilize dedicated advising staff to improve student success and retention. But what happens when students and faculty embrace the professional advising model and the resulting demand for high-touch advising services creates workload challenges?

In this session, academic advisors from our institution discuss the ways in which our roles developed and our workloads increased since implementing a college-level professional advising model that employs a proactive approach with caseloads under 400 students. We describe issues related to advising workload challenges, share strategies for tracking and managing workload, and suggest methods for prioritizing advising services.
