Title: Faculty Advising Matters: How to Strengthen Faculty Advising on Your Campus

Abstract: Do you want to improve faculty advising? Do you need ideas for working with new faculty; creating effective programming that includes active training techniques; using NACADA materials successfully; designing a Master Advisor or Faculty Fellows Program for faculty; and respectfully engaging caring faculty at your institution?

This pre-conference workshop focuses on positive and effective approaches for enhancing faculty advising. Specifically, in this pre-conference session, the presenters will engage participants in discussion and provide examples of:

- How to use the NACADA Core Competencies with faculty;
- The importance of understanding the NACADA Core Values of Academic Advising;
- How to introduce faculty advisors to advising models, approaches, and research;
- How to structure an onboarding and development program for new and experienced faculty advisors;
- Learning outcomes for advising;
- Recognition and reward opportunities for faculty advising;
- Faculty-centered programs such as a Master Advisor Program and a Faculty Fellows program;
- Developing high-level support for effective faculty advising (e.g., advocating for resource allocation, promotion and tenure standards on campus, the creation of campus advising bodies such as an advising forum or council);
- How faculty advising can reinforce the central mission of an institution and how attendees can use campus trends to continually bolster the importance of faculty advising;

The presenters, representing a small private college and a large public university, are experienced advising administrators who have created and consulted on effective faculty advising systems.
