Lead Presenter: Robert Pettay
Date: October 06, 2020    Time: 1:35 pm - 2:20 pm
Room: Semi-Live
Abstract: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an approach designed to initiate behavior change based on intrinsic motivation. Motivational Interviewing is defined as 'a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Professional academic advisors work with students in the decision-making process related to majors, careers, and behaviors that influence the student's ability to achieve success. Often change is necessary and required if the student is to grow and develop and the advisor is in a primary position to assist the student in behavior change. Objectives of the session include increasing familiarity with MI principles, understanding behavior change, using questioning and reflection in advising, and applying MI in the advising setting.
