Title: Manning the Life Boat-Best Practices When Advising College Students With Depression
Lead Presenter: Julie Preece
Date: October 06, 2020    Time: 3:25 pm - 4:10 pm
Room: Live
Abstract: The National Institutes of Health reports that 30 % of college students in the US are depressed with suicide being the third leading cause of death among the 15-24 age groups. If these figures are not chilling enough, the World Health Organization reports of all individuals throughout the world experiencing depression only 10-15% receive treatment. We know that advisors are often the first college professionals to work with these students, and not all students inform us that they have depression. This interactive session, through the use of video's and discussion, will provide: ideas/best practices for recognizing the symptoms, and how depression may impact academic performance/disability, advisement sessions, and provide advisors ideas on referrals and how to ask the most difficult of questions regarding self-harm.
