Abstract:
|
What do students tell themselves when they fail? What do they tell themselves about their own potential? The advising profession borrows many concepts from the fields of psychology and counseling. Narrative therapy (White, 2006) can be one such concept to help students navigate and reframe failure. Using the specific Narrative Therapy approach of 1) putting together the narrative, 2) externalizing the problem, 3) deconstruction, and 4) unique outcomes, advisors can help students identify and form new internal stories as they move forward in their academics.
Narrative Therapy can be applied in various types of advising meetings including academic, career, and pre-professional advising. This session will provide advisors with a framework they can use when navigating difficult advising conversations, applying Narrative Therapy techniques, to help students reauthor their own story and move from failure to thriving. |
