Title: When Black Girl Magic Isn't Enuf: Gendered-Racial Battle Fatigue and the Experiences of Black Women Advisors & Administrators
Lead Presenter: Dawn Matthews
Date: October 08, 2020    Time: 11:05 am - 11:50 am
Room: Semi-Live
Abstract: #Blackgirlmagic represented a movement of uplifting the accomplishments of Black women that have been marginalized due to their gendered racial identity. Black women are increasingly making strides in representation in professional roles. However, despite their seemingly magical ability to succeed, they face unique challenges. Whether being deemed the diversity expert, serving as a mother/auntie figure to their students, or overtly experiencing racism and sexism in their professional settings, Black women face barriers that can result in fatigue and burnout. Ntozake Shange's work "For Colored Girls" provides a meaningful allegory to this dilemma. How do we cultivate spaces that Black women advising professionals can combat this fatigue? Join us as we discuss and learn.
