Title: For the Culture: Wakanda, HBCUs, and the Power of Organizational Culture
Lead Presenter: Dawn Matthews
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: At Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), Black students are empowered in their cultural identity and learn ways to harness their cultural capital to achieve their goals. For many, HBCUs serve as safe spaces that counter the experiences of historically white institutions where they would otherwise experience isolation and inadequate support. While Black colleges represent only 3% of institutions in the US, they have maintained a significant role in producing Black graduates. This presentation will explore the ways in which HBCUs embody the concept of Community Cultural Wealth to support Black students. Attendees will participate in interactive activities to reflect on the organizational culture within their institutions specific culture of advising and generate strategies for improvement.
