Title: Navigating the Waters: A Practitioners' Guide to Surveying and Using Data to Improve Adult Learners' Academic Experiences

Abstract: A survey was completed by adult learners to assess topics such as experienced and preferred classroom teaching methods and uncover perceived barriers that influence academic experiences and affect persistence. The results indicate a strong preference for classroom discussions, lecture-style presentations, and internships as leading preferred approaches. Work/life/school demands, lack of flexibility in course offerings, and chronological age were some of the perceived barriers identified. According to the NALC, adult learners "struggle to balance the competing demands of work, family and education" (2017). Through the data, we have been more proactive in our attempts to improve the educational experiences of our adult learners with the goal of increasing persistence. Resulting programming is outline in the proposal.
