Title: Bridging the Gap With Large Advising Rosters: Peer Advising and Other Student Engagement Strategies
Lead Presenter: Joel Waters
Date: October 07, 2020    Time: 3:20 pm - 4:05 pm
Room: Live
Abstract: Does it seem like the number of your advisees exceeds your means to connect with them? This is a common issue when undergraduate populations grow more rapidly than advising staff. Within a large public institution, the Department of Biology and College of Engineering have enacted numerous practices (i.e. peer advising, new communication strategies, large group advising, etc.) to not only make advising more efficient, but also ensure that students feel valued within a large campus population. In this session, we'll review several approaches to managing an oversized advising load, open the discussion to session attendees to share best practices, and conclude with a Q&A session. See how advising can be supportive, personalized, and caring no matter the number of your advisees!
