Title: Disabling Barriers: How Access and Alliances Matter for Students with Disabilities
Lead Presenter: Jill Hartmann
Date: October 27, 2025    Time: 2:45 pm - 3:45 pm
Room: Neopolitan III, Promenade Level
Abstract: Have you noticed that DEIB mission statements often leave out students with disabilities? Is there a student-led disability cultural community on your campus? What causes the disconnect between federal laws and real experiences - academically, socially, and pre-professionally - for students with disabilities in higher education? Legislation requires federally-funded institutions to grant reasonable accommodations, but students with disabilities face barriers to access and lack their own university-sponsored student organizations. How can advisors motivate staff, faculty, and students to engage in Awareness, Acceptance, and Advocacy on behalf of access and alliances for students with disabilities? Participants in this interactive session will be invited to share insights and case studies in group discussions, and to explore action steps for change for students with disabilities.
