Presentation Proposal - NACADA Annual Conference
Presentation Info and Handouts
Conference Year: 2020
Session #: P07(PRE-2)
Title: Validating Advising Practices: Developing Meaningful Connections Between Students and Advisors
Lead Presenter: Tamara Coronella
Date: October 05, 2020    Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Room: Preconference Workshop
Abstract: "At-risk", "underprepared", "disadvantaged", and "minority" are terms too frequently used to describe certain populations of students. These terms describe students as deficient, as lacking in what is needed to succeed. Alternatively, considering the unique experiences of students and viewing students from an asset-based perspective, creates advising interactions that focus on students' strengths. The session will describe research studies that explored the use of advising practices crafted to validate those strengths. Within the studies, advisors, and students reported a rich, meaningful connection upon which a truly holistic relationship is built. The interactive, evidence-based pre-conference workshop will include in-depth explorations of key theoretical frameworks, strategies for advisors to use when helping students to identify and apply their assets, and the development of an action plan for advisors to implement after the conference.
