Abstract:
|
Have you worked with a student who was stuck with finding their major? Maybe they're undecided or their current major is not the right fit. What if they are a first-generation student? With just four methods added to your advising toolkit.
Examples include:
1) Compiling a comprehensive list of student facing resources and opportunities.
2) Creating a safe & supportive environment within your office and department.
3) Providing encouragement and guidance toward self-advocacy.
4) Utilizing the 'We 5' engagement approach. A) We offer a seat, B) We sit, C) We listen, D) We recall and, E) We offer continuous support after.
Using these techniques would enhance advising practices for both new and long-term advisors, regardless of which university setting you're in. It could also help Improve the advising experience we build with students. |
