Title: Validating and Racialized Experiences in Advising: Understanding Advisors' Perspectives at HSIs
Lead Presenter: Salvador Gomez-Pantoja
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Room: Pompeian Ballroom II, Promenade Level
Abstract: This presentation focuses on the validating and racialized experiences of academic advisors at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). Drawing from a collaborative action research study, we explore how advisors navigate their roles within a holistic care advising model (HCAM) and how their experiences impact their ability to provide support and foster a sense of belonging for students. Using the multidimensional framework of servingness (Garcia et al., 2019) and validation theory (Rendon, 1994), this session highlights the critical importance of addressing the impact of racialized experiences on advisor well-being and effectiveness. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to create validating and inclusive environments for advisors within their institutions.
