Title: How Our Biases Shape Our Interactions With African American Male Students
Lead Presenter: Gerron Scott
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: The media portrays African American males as brainless savages bent on creating chaos. As advisors, we know better or do we? African American males lag behind their peers in almost every measurable category but the needle is not moving much. We tend to offer one size fits all solutions for African American males but they are not a homogeneous group. To better serve this population we need to break free of this mindset. We do this by examining our biases against African American males. In this presentation we examine how our biases impact our interactions with African American males. We will look inside of ourselves and being to undo the damage caused by society and our own thoughts.
