Abstract:
|
This article examines the role of disciplinary knowledge in academic advising, including which aspects of disciplinary knowledge are most germane to advising and how it should be incorporated into advising as a scholarly endeavor. Attention to disciplinary knowledge lies in contrast to knowledge of students, technological tools, and educational institutions. In differentiating between different disciplines according to their questions, topics, and analytic methods, advisers can help explain why a particular course of study is worthy or important. Such knowledge may be used in advising students and scholars at any and all levels of expertise. Neither current doctoral training in disciplines nor standard training for professional advisers fully provides advisers with the disciplinary knowledge they need. To illustrate, I draw on knowledge from different disciplines, especially sociology, my disciplinary field of training. |
