Abstract: Fostering Inclusivity and Empathy: Empowering Advisors as Catalysts to Meeting Changing Student Needs
This engaging pre-conference workshop explores the pivotal theme of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belongingness (DEIB) in the context of academic advising. Participants will actively engage in discussions and collaborative activities gaining insights into seamlessly integrating these essential dimensions into the academic advising relationship, bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application. The workshop is designed to equip attendees with valuable tools and strategies specifically tailored to address the needs of racially and ethnically diverse student populations. Advisors will learn how to cultivate an inclusive environment that fosters a strong sense of belonging for all students within the academic sphere. By championing DEIB principles, advisors play a crucial role in affirming students' significance in the educational landscape, contributing to enhanced confidence and overall success from matriculation to graduation. The workshop places a strong emphasis on participant feedback regarding DEIB, ensuring that attendees leave with a comprehensive understanding of how to actively promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and a profound sense of belonging in their advising practice.
