Title: Administrators Perceptions of Academic Advising Roles, Functions and Purposes: Results From an Empirical Study

Abstract: As leaders of higher education institutions, chief academic officers are in a position to affect how advising is structured and performed on college campuses. Yet little is known about how high-level administrators regard academic advising. This presentation will provide results of a study investigating how 181 chief academic officers at two-year and four-year public and private institutions in the U.S. view academic advising roles, functions and purposes. Using a Likert-scale instrument built from the NACADA core competencies, we explored the degree to which chief academic officer perceptions of advisor tasks represent the areas (informational, relational and conceptual) of the core competencies and what they perceive the primary purpose of academic advising to be. Our findings suggest administrators value advising but perhaps advisors have work to do in communicating the value of conceptual aspects of advising.
