Presentation Info and Handouts
Conference Year: 2020
Session #: D027(LEC)
Title: Exploring Multilingual Advising: Challenges and Best Practices
Lead Presenter: Cherry Lim
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: As academic advisors, the primary language we use to communicate with students is English. This places an undue burden on students and advisors who speak languages other than English. In our role as multilingual advisors at a community college, we serve as advocates, translators, and ambassadors for students to build a stronger sense of belonging.

Participants will walk away from this session with an understanding of Multilingual Advising and how to incorporate this framework into their advising toolkit: knowing who your multilingual students are, creating an inclusive environment to encourage these students to succeed, and understanding challenges of multilingual advising. The presenters speak Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, and Spanish. Participants who speak languages other than English are strongly encouraged to attend, but this session is open to all.
